Coldworker: Rotting paradise

Fine, I’ll go into a bit more detail. Coldworker are a fairly young band whose individual members have impressive pedigrees amongst the metallic hordes. They know exactly what they’re up to on “Rotting paradise”. Take a downright nasty guitar tone and churn out some nutpunching riffs that marry the skittish inhabitants of the rocky mountains of grind with the slack jawed dwellers in the fertile valley of death. Imagine if the natural barriers between Rotten Sound and Iniquity were removed, and by some anti-speciation miracle the two were able to mate. Like a devilish liger.
The offspring of this uniquely unholy union are twelve twisting tracks for your listening pleasure. “Citizens…”, “Black dog…”, Paradox…” – and fucken don’t even get me started on the groovebeast that is “The Machine”. When these kids hit their stride, the results are massive. Problematically that doesn’t happen every time. Some of the songs are entertaining but fail to really push the exploding envelope or bring anything new to the carcass-splashed table.
Still, if you can handle some good in the middle of a bunch of great, there’s little to complain about. This is definitely one of those albums that you don’t listen to all the way through, but instead pick over for the “greatest hits” when the right musical mood hits. And when that mood calls for premium death/grind, Coldworker (like Colt 45 malt liquor) works every time.
